Never Leave Your Stove On

9/19/2022 (Permalink)

We received a call from an insurance representative about a client of theirs that received fire damage in their home. The cause of the loss was a stove that was left turned on, resulting in the cooking pan catching fire. As the tenant was leaving their home they noticed smoke coming out of their window. They ran back inside and attempted to put it out by throwing water on it. By then it was too late, the fire had already grown which made the situation worse. They evacuated the home and waited for the fire department to arrive and put it out. Fortunately the home was saved but not without damage to the kitchen and leaving the owners distressed  from this experience.

Always remember to turn off the stove and cooking equipment when not in use. Not doing so can result in a fire starting and within one minute you can suddenly have a variety of complications and high stress levels. Also, if the fire is too dangerous or you feel you don't know how to properly put one out, then the safest thing to do is to evacuate the home until help arrives. It’s always a great idea to know the number of your local fire department as well, the faster you call them the faster they will arrive. If you ever require assistance in mitigating fire damage, feel free to contact SERVPRO of South Pasadena / San Marino at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We specialize in fire damage and we always want to help you with your situation.

We Are Ready for Emergency Calls

9/15/2022 (Permalink)

We recently received a call from a church representative where a washer had leaked and the tenant requested for same day emergency service to prevent further damage. We responded quickly and that same day our team arrived to inspect, extract the water and to set up the necessary equipment. The water managed to reach the laundry room, hallway, a bedroom closet, and the master bedroom. Their hardwood floor was already showing signs of buckling when the tenant had first called. Our team managed to save parts of the affected area by drying out what we could but unfortunately a sizable portion of the section was not salvageable and had to be removed. We began the demolition process and our crew set up a containment around the affected area to prevent the damage from spreading.  When we began to demo our technicians and project manager noticed that there was about 10 square feet of mold on the subfloor and sill plates that was caused by the water leakage. Our team adapted to the situation and the next day our crew began the mold remediation and were able to finish that very same day.  This was important because mold can spread rapidly especially when there has been water damage. Although we weren't able to save all of the material we were still able to finish the restoration process in less than a week. Leaving our client satisfied.

When your commercial building receives damage it is key to take action quickly as you don't want the damage to affect your guests or services. Hotels, restaurants, retail shops, or grocery stores are just some of the types of businesses that have hundreds of foot traffic that walk in daily. One of the heaviest utilized areas at these establishments are the restrooms. The maintenance of these restrooms should be a priority as they get dirty and misused frequently. • Upset customers or staff because of the lack of maintenance
  • Possible health hazards
  • Having to close down the restroom due to the damage
  • You will spend more money and time fixing the damage than doing some basic upkeep consistently

Can Your HVAC Start a Fire?

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

Fires are a devastating experience, when they occur they are sudden and unexpected so it is difficult to prepare for one. We are in the middle of Summer here in Southern California. The average temperatures are above 90 degrees and in some places over 100 degrees. Right now air conditioning units are in high usage. This makes sense because one wants to be comfortable and cool in their own home. However, the strenuous usage can actually become a fire hazard. The wiring systems from your HVAC unit could be faulty, it can have a short circuit, and since they require so much energy then it can cause an electrical overload. Thus leading to fires. Doing some preventive maintenance is key as it may prevent future complications. Some fires have also begun because the air conditioning units are left on while people are away from home. This can be avoided  by simply turning it off or not leaving it unsupervised for high periods of time. Using the air conditioning unit less frequently also reduces the stress put on the electrical system as well, thus decreasing the chances of a fire taking place.

Air conditioners are great to have, especially when it is hot. But if they are not properly used then they can become a hazard. If they were to start a fire then you can potentially be dealing with a variety of issues and expenses. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino specializes in fire damages. In the unfortunate event we are always willing to help and set you on the right path. We can be reached at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Mold Removal Can Be Complicated

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

Mold can grow in a variety of places with elevated moisture levels that are not properly maintained. This includes places such as the restroom, kitchen or HVAC area. It can also grow in areas that have high humidity levels such as your basement or crawl space. Also, when you receive water damage whether it's from a leak, overflow, or burst pipe; not being proactive in fixing the issue can eventually lead to the development of mold in the affected area.

If you do happen to have mold it is important to stay out of the affected area and be cautious. Limiting exposure is key as depending on the type of mold it can be hazardous. If the HVAC is the source then it should be turned off as it can aid in spreading mold spores throughout the home. Make sure there are no fans nearby. You don't want air blowing across areas that have mold. If you attempt to remove it yourself make sure you use the appropriate material; not doing so may result in the situation worsening. You also want to identify the main source of the problem, sometimes it can be in between the walls. If so then cleaning the surface area may not be enough. You may need to tear down some walls to fix the issue.  Another crucial step is to set up a containment in the working area to keep airborne mold spores from spreading beyond the zone.  As you can see mold remediation can be a challenging process for many and it is not something that should be winged or done on your own. Doing so can create more complications.

When it comes to mold removal it is best to contact a professional service to assist you. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is just that. We specialize in mold removal and we have the tools to assist you efficiently and effectively. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and we can be reached at (626) 852-9922. So when you have questions regarding mold remediation don't hesitate to contact us.

Burst Toilet Supply Line

7/29/2022 (Permalink)

the floor of a house The visible damage on the carpet that was caused by the water

We recently received a job from a tenant who had water damage in their home. The cause was a leak from a burst toilet supply line that took place in the upstairs bathroom. The water leak affected the bathroom, hallway, powder room and the bedroom on the second floor. Some of the affected materials included the tile floor, drywall, and the carpets. Unfortunately since it took place on the second floor the water spread to the bottom level as well where the restroom, water heater area, and garage received damage. The tenants insurance reached out to SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino for assistance. We arrived the same day and extracted all the water, we also set up the drying equipment in the necessary areas to save what we can.  We managed to dry out about 90% of the walls and ceilings. Saving the client money, time, and less stress. We packed out the necessary materials and placed them in storage containers to allow us to proceed with demolition of the non salvageable areas. All of this was done within a few days.

Damaged Caused by a Sprinkler!

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

Material being covered for containment The material in the office was covered during the restoration process.

We recently received a call from an Optometric office in Arcadia where a pipe connected to a water sprinkler in the exterior of the building burst and caused water to leak into the main room of the office, leaving standing water for a few hours and causing damage to the area.

They reached out to us for assistance.  We arrived quickly to inspect the situation and begin the restoration process. Our Project Manager inspected the damage and saw that the laminate flooring, lower walls, and some cabinets were either damaged or contained high moisture levels.  We then extracted the water and set up plastic containment around some of the business materials so that they would not get damaged. We set up several air movers and dehumidifiers in necessary areas to speeden up the drying process. Because we set up the equipment swifty we were able to dry out a good portion of the affected area within a few days. Thus, reducing the amount of demoing that had to be done. The areas that were not salvageable we removed the damaged material; allowing the owner to begin the replacement process. The owner was impressed with the amount of time we were taking during this entire procedure and was satisfied that they had reached out to us.

Whenever water damage takes place it is key to take action quickly. Having to close down for a few days or keeping your business open while damaged can impact your operations and possibly deter away potential customers. Clamp Light Was Left Turned On

4/6/2022 (Permalink)

Clamp Light In Front of Window The clamp light where the fire originated from.

A clamp light was accidentally left on over the weekend. This resulted in a small fire that led to extensive water damage. Fortunately, the fire sprinklers set off and they were able to put away the fire; preventing any catastrophic damage. However, the sprinkler system still ended up causing severe water damage to the building.

The sprinklers first caused a flood in the room where the fire originated from. As the water kept flowing out, it eventually spread into the room next door. The water ended up damaging the floors, walls, and cabinets. Unfortunately, since it was a two story building and the flood occurred in the top floor, the water began seeping into the lower level. The first floor ended up receiving damage in similar areas as the top floor. But the ceiling and some of the material in between the first and second floor were also damaged. Due to the fire, a bad odor was also left throughout the building. They reached out to SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino for assistance and we were happy to help. We were able to get to the location swiftly to inspect the situation. Afterwards, we were able to begin the mitigation and restoration process.

Don’t forget to unplug or turn off unnecessary items if you are leaving a building alone. Accidents can happen at any time of the year. Being aware and proactive can save you a lot of trouble down the road. If you ever need services relating to fire or water damage then feel free to reach out to SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino. We are always happy to help. You can contact us at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year!

Potential Fire Hazards

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

A fire can originate from a variety of sources and can begin at any moment. Whether it is self caused or natural it can spread quickly. If one does not take action swiftly then their entire building may be lost. There are a variety of things that we use in our homes daily that can cause a fire.

The kitchen is one of the areas where fires are common, after all we use fire to cook with our stoves daily. Having a malfunctioning stove can be problematic. If it leaks gas, it can be hazardous to your health and become highly flammable. Continuously using a dirty stove, over-cooking or leaving food unattended can also cause a sudden flame. The appliances you use daily such as your washer, dryer, microwave, and refrigerator can also be an issue. If they are overused or used incorrectly they can generate an excess amount of heat that leads to a fire. Electrical components are also a potential cause.Electronics such as your television, phone charger, radio, and computer can overheat. It is important to keep certain appliances or electrical components away from direct heat as this will cause them to overheat at a faster rate.

It is never a bad idea to be aware of potential fire hazards around home. If you do happen to ever come across fire damage to your property then SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino will help you deal with your problem. We have experts that specialize in dealing with fire damages. We are available at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours, 7 days days a week, 365 days per year.

Don't Let Your Drains Get Clogged Up

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

Backed up water in the restroom is one of the usual causes of water damage in households. Due to the heavy usage of the sink, shower, and toilet, it is common for the drain lines to become clogged up. When this happens water can suddenly spill all over and leave you with severe water damage. If you remain unaware or are inattentive towards the problem, then the water can spread outside of the restroom into the rest of your home, resulting in a more complex situation.

There are a variety of reasons of why water will back up including:

  • Old or worn out pipes that may not be able to handle the pressure and flow of the water.
  • Too many materials flowing into the sink or shower such as dirt, grease, or hair
  • Flushing too much toilet paper at once
  • Flushing other types of paper such as towels or wipes
  • Flushing random items down the toilet and sink
  • Tree roots growing into your sewage line, damaging them preventing an effective flow of water
  • Heavy rainfall that finds its way into your sewage pipes
  • Not cleaning drain pipes consistently

It is a good idea to inspect your restroom area for any potential concerns. Noticing them early on can save you from complications long term. If you ever do run into a situation where water overflows in your restroom area then SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino specializes in dealing with water damage and we are prepared to resolve your problem. Space Heaters

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Spring has finally arrived. You think to yourself the weather is warm and now I can enjoy the sunshine. But then you quickly realize that it still gets chilly in the morning and during the night  when you are getting ready for bed. Due to the lingering cold weather, you don’t quite put away your heater as you use it in the morning and night time to warm yourself up. However, it is important to remain cautious of space heaters at all times even if they are used less frequently. Because they provide you with warmth and comfort it is easy to forget that space heaters are a high risk of starting a fire.

There are several things you can do to minimize the risk of a fire when using a space heater. First, you want to make sure that it is in good condition. If it is flawed there is a higher chance it can overheat or damage the outlets it is connected to, possibly causing sparks. Also be aware of using a power strip, as it may damage anything connected to it. If so, then those items will also run a risk of causing a fire. To reduce the chances of your space heater falling over it should be placed on a flat surface or the floor.  Also, they shouldn't be placed on a flammable surface. For example, if it is placed on a cabinet made of wood there is a higher chance it can start a fire due to the heat contacting the wood. Wherever you place it, make sure to keep it at least a couple feet away from anything that is easily flammable. This includes curtains, clothing, your bed, cotton materials, papers, and so on.

Remember that if you are using a space heater do not leave it unsupervised for long periods of time as it can become dangerous quickly. If you ever have any fire damage then SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is experienced in dealing with fire damages and we can help you deal with your problem. We are available at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.

Hail Storms

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Hail storms can be rare in Southern California, but when they do occur, they can be detrimental to your home. The damage can range from light to heavy depending on the size and the speed at which the hail drops. At times a hail storm only occurs for a short amount of time. However, when ice falls from the sky, regardless of the time, it can still lead to property damages.

Hail can cause dents, holes, and cracks in your roof, where water can then seep in and fall throughout the inside of your home. If it's light damage you may not notice, but this can be a bad thing because if you leave water damage unattended for too long it can lead to mold. The mold will deviously continue growing, and by the time you notice, it will be more difficult and costly to remove. If the hail happens to fall at an angle it can potentially crack or break your windows.  The hail will then be able to come indoors where it can cause water damage. Hail can also be so powerful that it can knock down your gutters. This will prevent water from flowing away from your home properly. When it's impacting directly, hail can also damage your exterior walls. As you can see, even in Southern California hail should not be taken lightly. It is advised that after a hail storm to take some time to inspect your home for possible damages.

If you do happen to receive any unfortunate hail damage, SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is ready to step in and help. We specialize in mitigating water, fire, and mold damages. We can be reached at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Commercial Water Damages

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

Business owners never want anything bad to happen to their place of business. However, accidents happen and it is important to know certain “minor” things can have a huge impact on your property if not taken care of properly. Most people when they hear of water damage, they envision it as a result from floods or water storms, but that is not always the case. Here are some things to look out for.

  1. Malfunctioning Sprinkler Systems: Older buildings may have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. They are crucial to help with a fire emergency but can cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of  replacement.
  2. Damaged Appliances and Equipment: Any appliances or equipment that use water, if they fail it could send water across your building. It could happen during late hours when no one is around and you could be surprised when you come in the next morning. Keep in mind that water travels. Sometimes the areas that are affected don't clearly show the extent of the damage.
  3. Broken Pipes and Plumbing: If the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.
  4. Backed up Sewer Lines: If the sewer line in your building becomes clogged or damaged, you need to act fast as there is the potential danger of contaminated black water which can cause health problems and ruin products and furnishings.

If you ever run into one of these problems and it leads to water damage, call SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino at 626-852-9922 and we will be happy to help. The quicker you catch it, the less likely it will lead to mold damage. It is better to be proactive vs. reactive. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino services the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Electrical Outlets and Water

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

When water damage takes place most people will look at the obvious damage first. This may include  water on the floor, wet cabinets, broken water pipes and in general water spreading throughout your home. They may even attempt to begin the drying process themselves, this is not a bad idea as being proactive can save a lot of trouble down the road. However, one of the most forgotten issues of when water damage occurs is not looking out for electrical outlets, as it is common to be able to find them all around a home.

It is advised to unplug anything connected to the outlets, if possible shut off the outlet  and remove anything that uses electricity nearby.  If necessary you can even shut off the electricity in the building until the situation is under control. Once the situation is steady and you confirm that the damage is minor, you can attempt to dry the outlet yourself. It is advised to not plug anything into a wet outlet for at least a day. A wet outlet in usage can become dangerous. It can instantly shock anyone that comes into contact with it, the pain can then range anywhere from mild to severe. Not only is the outlet already damaged, but it also has the potential to damage any product that gets plugged into it. Thus, the problem begins extending beyond water damage. In extreme measures, wet outlets can catch on fire and create dangers all around. The length of time and cost to resolve the issue will then increase dramatically along with the stress.

So remember, when water damage occurs, become aware of your surroundings.  Keep an eye out for electricity outlets and components. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is ready to step in if necessary. Available at (626) 852-9922 feel free to give us a call. We are also available 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Damaged? No Worries

Carpet in SERVPRO Warehouse Carpet in the process of being restored

Having sudden water damage can be stressful and it might give you the feeling that everything that got wet is lost. You think to yourself that you will need to not only fix the issue, but you will have to replace the damaged products as well. However, that is not always the case. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino specializes in restoration and if possible we will save your products. This benefits you because you will not have to worry about losing valuable items. Some of the items that we can save include books, carpets, beds, cabinets, key documents, hardware, tile, walls and much more.

We do this by arriving as soon as possible and by beginning the drying process. We will aim to save wet areas like walls, cabinets, and floors. We begin the procedure by placing equipment like air movers, drying fans, and air scrubbers on necessary areas to help accelerate the process. The faster that something dries, the higher the chance it can be restored. If necessary, we will also set up dehumidifiers. What this will do is reduce high levels of humidity by extracting water in the air, help get rid of bad odors and reduce the chances of mold growing. After evaluating the situation and setting up the proper equipment, our project managers will contact  you and check in occasionally to evaluate the status. If necessary, they will make changes to make sure the job is being done effectively.

We will then pack out necessary equipment. For example, damaged carpets, documents, hardware or any valuable item you want to restore. We will then bring them back to our warehouse where our team will use special equipment and techniques to re-establish your items. When you receive them back you will be satisfied, as they will look as good as new. Thus, saving you the stress of shopping for replacements.

As you can see, here at SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino we are ready to help you and get your life back to normal. If you need assistance don't hesitate to contact us at (626) 852-9922. We are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Rainy Season

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino has been in the property restoration business for over 16 years.  The team has seen a lot of storm damaged properties in that time.  Storms in the Los Angeles Basin are on the mild side compared to those experienced in the MidWest and East Coast, however we do have unusually wet years that surprise property owners who don’t keep up with maintenance.

Most commonly, maintenance of roofing is left off the list of concerns by residential and commercial property owners.   Because the roof can be years beyond its useful life before a good spring or fall rain storm, by the time the owner realizes it, the damage is done and restoration services are needed in addition to roof repairs.

Periodic maintenance of your roof can be scheduled very easily before the Southern California “Rainy Season” by planning ahead when roofing contractors are slower.  If you wait until the season for rain is upon us, roofing contractors are so busy, finding one to respond quickly can be impossible.  Instead, the property owner will be forced to find somebody to put tarps over the roof to reduce further damage while waiting for repairs.

If you need services on your property and the quality of the service from start to finish is important to you, SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino would be a great choice to call on for help.

We serve all locations in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.

Restoration experts are available 24/7 to speak with you by calling 626-852-9922.  Stay safe out there.  Sincerely, SERVPRO Joe McCann.

Servicing Commercial & Industrial Customers

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

The Restoration industry has many challenges when providing services to Commercial and Industrial customers.

Most obviously, the size of the projects can become extremely large, requiring not just more equipment and personnel to restore, but the logistics for working around customer requirements, coordination of various other contractors who will be working side by side with the Restoration team, and the variety of specialized equipment that will be deployed to efficiently reduce the time and cost restoring the property.

Management of all the “moving parts” of a Large Loss restoration project needs to be handled by a Project Manager with experience deploying people and equipment resources on a daily basis to be sure they are used to the greatest advantage, assuring safety, quality, and efficiency.

The final result of a properly managed Large Loss Restoration is the return of the facility to the owner or tenants as quickly as possible, with no doubt the job has been restored to it’s pre-existing condition or better.

To assure you of the best possible outcome, SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino stands behind It’s services with over 16 years of experience and experts that have seen every possible variation of disaster that can affect a commercial or industrial structure.

If you want and need the best team to work on your commercial property, call on SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino.  We serve all locations in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.

Restoration experts are available 24/7 by calling 626-852-9922.  Stay safe out there.  Sincerely, SERVPRO Joe McCann.

You Might Have Unknown Disasters!

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

It’s very rare for a commercial property that has stood for decades to be free of the most common disasters that eventually affect all structures.

The roof ages until it no longer keeps out the water, ultimately resulting in a water loss

The plumbing becomes stressed and fails from foundations that are shifting from settling

Remodel projects move utility services around and workmanship can be substandard

Storms can damage windows, tear off roofing, and rising flood waters can rush in.

Fire sprinklers can be activated causing widespread flooding

There are so many ways an owner of a commercial building can be affected which may negatively impact their investment in the property and the revenue from tenants.

Knowing who to call on those days when a powerful storm or a twist of fate presents a potential financial disaster can make all the difference in minimizing the impact.

SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is a company you can call on to repair damages caused by Fire, Flooding, Sewer Spills, Slab Leaks, Mold, Storm Damage, pretty much anything that can disrupt businesses and cost the owner and tenants money.

We serve all locations in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.  Restoration experts are available 24/7 by calling 626-852-9922.  Stay safe out there.  Sincerely, SERVPRO Joe McCann.

We Handle Large Loss Jobs

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

Most restoration companies don’t have the experience or capacity to work on Commercial/Industrial projects exceeding hundreds of thousands of square feet like multistory offices or extensive facilities like malls.

For this type of restoration, the service provider needs to have knowledge of the optional equipment needed to handle very large structures and be able to call up hundreds of experienced personnel and experts in specialty fields for drying, ventilating, sanitizing, and restoring large buildings in a timely manner.

Also, in many cases, the damage caused by one disaster can lead to additional damages caused by emergency responders.  An example:  when a large structure is subjected to a fire, the Fire Department response is to pour hundreds of thousands of gallons of water on the building to put it out.  So, not only is there fire and smoke damage, there is also water damage to all the affected areas.  The combination will call for different processes than if there was only flooding or just smoke damage to a structure.

In most cases there can be health and safety concerns for workers in these damaged structures.  The air quality and potential for biohazards like in the case of sewer spills will require Safety equipment called Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Full face respirators, Tyvek jumpsuits, safety glasses, and gloves are necessary to keep the restoration team safe from contamination until the risk is removed.

When you call SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino you are getting the very best Project Managers and experts in Commercial restoration.

There are so many restoration companies around.  The reason is there is so much need for restoration services.  In very densely populated areas like the Los Angeles Basin, there are approximately 10 million people living and working in extremely close quarters.  The amount of infrastructure required to provide electricity, water, sewer, and natural gas to every home, office, mall, etc. is a marvel of technology and sheer determination.

To keep it all running smoothly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for years would be a miracle.  And as we know this does not happen because all this infrastructure fails from old age, gets damaged extending it to new properties, and gets wrecked by storms and earthquakes, to name a few causes.

That’s why SERVPRO and all those other restoration companies are in business and will probably have jobs forever.

However, there is a difference in the quality of services you can expect from most if not all the other restoration companies.  SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is a company owned and operated by a recognized expert in the restoration industry.  “SERVPRO Joe” McCann has lived and worked in the Los Angeles Basin for over 16 years and earned the admiration of industry leaders by being honest, working hard, and earning trust serving his Los Angeles customers and traveling all over the United States helping people recover from natural and man-made disasters.  Disaster areas like Hurricane Ike in Texas, Hurricane Irene on the East Coast, The Waldo Fires in Colorado, and the natural Gas Explosion in San Bruno California.

If you are searching for a stand out restoration contractor, you only have to look in your backyard to find SERVPRO Joe, owner of SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino.  We serve all locations in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.

Restoration experts are available 24/7 by calling 626-852-9922.  Stay safe out there.  Sincerely, SERVPRO Joe McCann.

Fire Season

8/13/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Season! If you live in California, you might have heard of it. If you live in Southern California, you have definitely heard of it! What is it? What is it caused by? SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino is here to let you know what’s what.

Did you know that there are actually two fire seasons?! Well, it’s true. The first fire season occurs from June through September and stems from the warmer and drier weather. These fires primarily happen in the inland forests. The second fire season occurs from October to April and is driven by the Santa Ana winds. Due to the winds, the fires spread quicker and happen in more urban areas. Fires started by the second season are what we at SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino would most likely see in action.

The best thing you can do is to prepare you and your house for a possible fire. This means having an emergency plan and a to-go bag. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is clearly the best choice you can make when it comes to fire & smoke damage and we service all throughout the Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties. Why Time Makes A Difference!

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

When a customer or an insurance carrier reports a water loss to SERVPRO of Glendora/San Dimas,  Irwindale/Baldwin, & South Pasadena/San Marino, a person to person response can be expected within one hour.  This is the start of our priority service that may result in the immediate dispatch of a crew and equipment in an emergency, or scheduling of the property for inspection prior to restoration.

However, the complexity and cost of restoration generally increases with the amount of time that passes before the start of the job.  So a timely request for help by the affected customer is essential.

In a flooded structure, if water is allowed to pool up, wood and other building materials in contact with the water will absorb it, increasing the drying time, potentially increasing the amount of work to assure proper drying, and increased costs to reconstruct the property after drying is complete.  Also, after the first 48 hours the chances of mold growth increases rapidly.

SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino has a standard for responding to a call in a timely manner to help keep the cost and time to recover from water damage to the absolute minimum.  This rapid reaction helps both the property owner and the insurance carrier to control avoidable expenses and inconvenience.

Water damage: Drying vs. Removal

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino is well versed in water damage/loss. We specialize in assessing what restoration approach to take when it comes to water damage?  In all cases, this depends on the significance of the damage. Are there different methods? The short answer is yes, but every job is different and we tailor the services specific to each job. The basic decision is if we want to attempt to dry the building materials in place or do we have to open up the walls and remove flooring?

Drying

When it comes to smaller damage i.e. one or two walls of a room, we use a drying method. We fix the air movers on the moisture spots and set up the dehumidifiers. What this does is two things, the air movers suspend the moisture in the air and the dehumidifiers condense the moisture so it can be drained it out of the area. In extreme cases, SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino might remove the baseboard and drill holes in the drywall in order to dry the moisture in between wall cavities. After 3 days if there is no progress, SERVPRO has to “flood cut” the Drywall to accelerate the drying process.  If the building materials don’t dry fast enough, there is an increased risk that mold could start growing in the wall cavities.

Removal

If saturation of the water is has risen more than two feet up the walls, this affects the whole room.   Then we perform what’s called a flood cut. In this case, SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino would cut out all the drywall two feet around the entire room.

Bonus: Insulation can be saved if it’s only moist. If it’s wet, then it has to be removed also.

SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is clearly the best choice you can make when it comes to any restoration or water damage needs and we service all areas throughout the Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties. Call us now for your water loss.

What's the Difference?

7/30/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO deals with a multitude of job types when it comes to fire, water, and mold clean up & restoration! A job could be residential, commercial, or even industrial. What does this mean? Well, let’s break that down. All of these definitions are quite intuitive by nature!

Residential

A residential job would be pertaining to an issue with a house or property in relation to residents. However, an apartment complex would be considered a commercial job because the nature of the business would be dealt with by the property manager and or owner rather than the resident.

Commercial

Which brings us to the next type of job: commercial. A commercial job consists of an issue with a place of business such as an office building, professional space, and as mentioned above an apartment complex.

Industrial

An industrial job involves a property that contains hundreds of thousands of square feet. This could be characterized by a manufacturing plant or large business property of some sort.

The good news is that whichever job type you have for SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino, we can handle it in an efficient and effective manner. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino services all throughout the Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties. Do not hesitate to call. We want to make sure you get the help you need when an emergency strikes.

Unusual Storms

7/30/2021 (Permalink)

What is a storm? Storms come in a variety of forms and some you might not recognize as storms. Let’s break it down for you!

A storm

A storm is any disturbed state of an environment or in an astronomical body's atmosphere especially affecting its surface, and strongly implying severe weather. This includes and isn’t limited to fires, mudslides, earthquakes, rain, hail, snow, etc. In this blog, we will focus on some of the unusual storms.

Fire season

What might surprise you is that fires are included in the list of storms. Well here in Southern

California due to lack of rain we experience a dry season, mix this with wildfires and it becomes a natural phenomenon.

Mudslides

A mudslide can be a storm, yes. There are three different types of causes for a mudslide: an earthquake, rapid rains, and volcanic eruptions. In our neck of the woods, mudslides are caused by lots of rain which erodes the soil at a fast rate.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes are a serious storm. They have been known to be deathly. Preparation is key for this storm. If you call SERVPRO we can help you with your personal preparedness in this next season.

Obviously, each season comes with its own struggles and storms but no matter what SERVPRO South Pasadena/San Marino, we can handle it in an efficient and effective manner. SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino services all throughout the Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties. Call us now for help with any of your storm needs.

Water Leaks to Electrical Fire

Electrical wiring can be found in nearly every modern building and supplies important electricity to ensure our lives run efficiently. On the downside, there are risks associated with wet wiring. One of the most common fire jobs we see at SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is caused by electrical fire damage. These are usually the cause of the exposed wire coming in contact with water.

List of Potential Causes

Electrical outlets may come in contact with water through a leaking roof, sudden flooding, or a big rainstorm. In an establishment in downtown Pasadena, a burst pipe flooded the upstairs and caused water to leak down to the kitchen below. Unfortunately, the electrical appliances were affected which caused an electrical kitchen fire. This is an unfortunate instance where water and fire damage happen at the same time. In homes, smaller-scale water issues such as a splash or leaking pipe can allow water to easily come into contact with an electrical outlet or worn-down wire. In cases where a recent flood has occurred, we strongly recommend that electricity to the home be shut off until professionals arrive. This reduces the risk of further damage occurring.

Water and Fire Damage Restoration Professionals

Joe McCann and his team of qualified technicians have had over 16+ years of experience in the restoration industry. If you experience a flood or burst pipe in your home or business and are unsure of what to do, call our team at SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino and we'll walk you through the restoration process. Our crew is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because we have a strong commitment to our customers. If you need a restoration company you can trust, call SERVPRO Joe today (626)-852-9922.

Supporting the Healthcare Industry

Coordinating with LACI

For the past few months, SEVRPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino has been coordinating with LACI, Los Angeles CleanTech Incubator, to transport manufactured face shields to hospitals throughout Los Angeles County. In April of 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic was in full swing, the LACI organization quickly jumped into action. They utilized the Advanced Prototyping Center (APC) to manufacture face shield donations for healthcare workers. This collaboration brought together organizations such as the Los Angeles Public Library’s Octavia Lab, Los Angeles County’s Youth@Work program, Goodwill of Southern California, City of Baldwin Park, the Greater Los Angeles Hospital Registry, and others. LACI plans to donate 100,000 shields by June 1st, 2021. As of February 19th, 2021, LACI was able to deliver over 42,000 face shields to doctors and nurses working in 25 different LA County Hospitals, including:

  • Community Hospital of Huntington Park
  • Long Beach Medical Center
  • Adventist Health Glendale
  • MLK Community Hospital
  • Lakewood Regional Medical Center
  • Sherman Oaks Hospital
  • Valley Presbyterian Hospital
  • Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center
  • White Memorial Hospital
  • Centinela Hospital Medical Center
  • Monterey Park Hospital
  • Mission Community
  • Whittier Hospital
  • Beverly Hospital

Recycled Material and Incorporating the Youth

The face shield design was originally tested by ER doctors at Cedar Sinai and helps prevent infectious droplets from entering the facial area. Additionally, these shields are designed so that they may be reused from one to five years. LACI works to recycle almost all plastic remnants leftover from manufacturing into 3D print filament that is then used in 3D printers, as opposed to being thrown away.

The LA Country Youth@Work program helps place youth in a paid job that leads to a long-term career pathway. The youth involved in this program have helped assemble and box face shields, creating jobs for over 140 people. LACI has also introduced these youth to their APC Fellowship Program, a paid fellowship that provides technical training, interpersonal skills, and industry-recognized certifications to succeed in the green economy. Due to the shortage of many entry-level employment opportunities, LACI organizers say that are grateful for the opportunity to provide paid employment and learning opportunities.

SERVPRO Delivery Trucks = More Faceshield Deliveries

At the beginning of 2021, SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino’s Sales Manager, Doug Beach, connected with a member of the LACI organization at a community meeting and asked how we could help with the efforts. Previously, the Los Angeles Library had been coordinating deliveries whenever possible. Now, with the help of SERVPRO’s huge box trucks, we are helping make deliveries of over 50 boxes of face shields every other Thursday, sometimes twice in one week. All shipments consist of 50 boxes containing 100 face shields. Each delivery contains 5,000 shields per delivery. Peyton Russell, Sales and Marketing Representative for SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino, accompanies Doug on these deliveries and takes photos/videos of the deliveries, something that seldom happened before. Additionally, Ms. Russell and Mr. Beach help to load and unload the face shields at the facilities, track the delivery forms, and persist in social media efforts for the cause.

Is the Rain Over Yet?

Where's the Rain?

In Southern California, it sometimes always feels like a dry season. Thankfully, the beginning quarter of 2021 has been fairly stormy and rainy. The California Poppy and Yellow Mustard Seed flowers are in bloom across the San Gabriel Valley. Making commutes and Los Angeles traffic slightly less blah with the gorgeous wildflower bloom!

Climate Change:

According to researchers, California’s rainy season has started 27 days later than it did in the 1960s. Decades ago, our rainy season began in November, and since California’s fire season is at a yearly high in October, November rains were a huge help in regulating that. Now, our rainy season begins in late December and is concentrated in January and February. A shorter, but sharper rainy season.

Call SERVPRO:

In the event, your home does suffer water damage from rainfall or a storm, be sure to call SERVPRO South Pasadena / San Marino. Joe McCann and his staff are available for emergency services 24/7.

Wild March Weather

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Green truck in front of house Warm March Weather

Rain, sunshine. Rain again, hail, clear blue skies. Snow in Pasadena. When was the last time Pasadena received snow? Clear skies again. More rain, hail the size of marbles, blue skies. All over a span of four days. With more rain to come this weekend. Off and on, of course. And doesn't South Pasadena and San Marino always look beautiful after the rain?

Wild Southern California weather, a storm that has continued to come and go, come and go.

Stay Prepared:

WIth rain and hail being so unpredictable this past week, paying close attention to weather reports is a must. It should go without saying that driving during crazy hail storms is not particularly safe. Try to plan any errands during the pockets of clear blue skies. It is also suggested not to travel during crazy weather storms.

If you have experienced flooding in your home or garage before, what preventive measures can you take to prevent that from happening again? Sandbags are always very helpful in directing water away from your home. Depending on the city that you live in, they might offer these at no cost for residents. Some cities will also provide barricades in high flooding areas. Make sure that your gutters and rain drains are free of debris so that rainwater can flow freely away from your home. You might also be able to obtain a rain barrel from your city or town as well, at no charge.

Call SERVPRO:

In case of any water damage to your home, be sure to call SERVPRO South Pasadena / San Marino. Joe McCann and his team are available for emergency services 24/7. Joe is a plethora of restoration knowledge and would be happy to answer all of your questions.

Rain, Rain, Go Away?:

What a week it has been in Southern California. So much weather, so little time. The constant bouncing back and forth between rain, hail, snow and blue skies is as fun as it is exhausting. With most families still working remotely and engaged in distance learning, this wacky week of weather can be a welcomed change of pace. For those of us that are commuting to work, and back to in person learning, it can be a headache.

It Pays to be Home:

If you fall under the category of still doing all of life's daily things remotely from home, you are in luck in the sense you are able to keep an eye on your home during these sudden downpours. The biggest tool in flood prevention is being present.

Your City Can Help You:

Most cities have a number of resources to help you protect your home during bad weather. Sand bags, rain barrels, and even barricades for high flood areas may be available at no cost to the homeowner. Call your City Hall, and they will be able to direct you to the right department to see if these resources are available for you. Sand bags are great tools to direct water runoff away from your home. Rain barrels can help collect water runoff to prevent flooding, and barricades can block run off, especially if you are in an area prone to mudslides.

Call SERVPRO:

In the event that your home or garage does flood during a rainstorm, call SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino. They have emergency services available 24/7.

Family sitting together Meet Joe McCann, his wife Danielle, and their three boys!

Time to celebrate!

Long-time franchise owner Joe McCann has recently acquired SERVPRO South Pasadena and San Marino this March. Joe and his team are very excited about joining the communities of both South Pasadena and San Marino!

Here is a little bit about Joe:

Joe and his wife Danielle McCann have owned SERVPRO of Glendora and San Dimas for over 16 years now. They are an amazing representation of the SERVPRO brand in the San Gabriel Valley. Their partnership is phenomenal, and they've both got your back for any type of water and fire emergency. They care immensely about both Glendora and San Dimas communities because it is their community too! They also own the SERVPRO Irwindale and Baldwin Park franchise, which they acquired in late 2017. Joe is always just a phone call away to answer any questions about SERVPRO’s services, or to share his journey as a franchise owner! He is a plethora of restoration knowledge! Seriously, ask him anything fire, water, or mold-related!

Together, Joe and Dani have three small children, sons Colton, Finn, and Parker. The future franchise owners of SERVPRO South Pasadena and San Marino. They are the “official” first line of defense for the franchise. They have big shoes to fill, but if they are anything like their hard-working parents, the cities of South Pasadena and San Marino will be in good hands for decades to come!

Firm Believers in Giving Back

Joe and Dani are firm believers in giving back to the South Pasadena and San Marino communities as much as possible. They often donate their trucks to be of service for local, charitable events! Such events include food drives, distribution of Covid-19 PPE, local rotary, and the chamber of commerce events. If using the SERVPRO trucks to help take goods from point A to point B for the party organizing helps their cause, the McCann’s are always honored to do it. They are firm believers in always giving back!

Here For You x2!

Two men talking in a commercial building Joe and Thomas from SERVPRO of Azusa/Covina coordinate on this large loss project

x2

When one SERVPRO isn't enough, we call in two! For many huge commercial projects, SERVPRO franchises are likely to call on another for assistance. This is one of the many benefits that SERVPRO has over other water restoration and fire restoration companies. Two SERVPRO's mean twice the team members, twice the resources, and half the time!

Commercial Property Flood

This commercial property experienced a fire from a candle left unattended a few weeks ago. The fire caused damage to one of the rooms in this property, setting off the fire sprinkler system. Thankfully the sprinkler system kicked in, however, the fire sprinkler system poured out too much water and flooded the property! Approximately 10 other rooms experienced flooding, and residents had to be evacuated while our team restored the building. SERVPRO of Azusa/Covina called in Joe's team and we coordinated on the project right away. When one SERVPRO isn't enough, we call two!

Putting The Customer First

Putting the customer's needs before our own is one of our top priorities here at SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino. We are extremely committed to providing the best quality restoration services that we are open 24/7 in case one of our customers experiences a disaster in the middle of the night or on weekends. We understand that you need a company that you can trust, and Joe McCann and Amir at SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino should be your first call.

Concerned about bathroom mold growth? Recently experience a flood from your toilet or washing machine? Leave your stove on too high and experience damage from a kitchen fire? Call SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino today!

The rainy season is upon us in Southern California. Although wind, rain, and hail can
be exciting if you’re cozied up by the fire, it is important to also remember that
storms can be dangerous. It is important to be prepared for any type of storm-weather emergency.

National Weather Service

The National Weather Service is a great resource when a storm is on its way to your
area. As said on their website, there are two types of storm actions they communicate with. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is telling the population to be prepared – a possible
thunderstorm is on its way, stay informed and updated.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means to take action – take shelter to stay safe
from imminent danger from wind, rain, and/or hail. Driving is also not preferred. Stay informed. Listen to local news, local radio and also use the internet as a resource on the impending weather.

SERVPRO Travels In Any Weather

In the event of a storm and damage ensues,

musty odor, mold, and paint blistering. Allow SERVPRO of South Pasadena and San Marino to
protect your home and belongings in case of storm damage. Joe McCann is always just a phone call away.

Becoming Familiar With Water Damage

With the rainy season upon us, it is important to be familiar with water damage.

Water Damage Dilemma

Sudden water damage to your home can be incredibly frustrating. If you find yourself in a situation where water is suddenly onboarding in your residence, immediately call SERVPRO of South Pasadena and San Marino. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Owner, Joe McCann, is always just a phone call away.

Until the water restoration professionals are SERVPRO arrive, there are a few things you can do to help with damage to your house, condo, or apartment.

Tips To Protect Your Possessions

Move anything of value out of the affected room that you are able to: photos, important documents, artwork, etc. Take old books, or pieces of scrap wood and use them to elevate your furniture. Place wood, books, or even brinks underneath the feet of your furniture to raise them above the waterline. This will help prevent any fabric or wood damage to your couches, chairs, tables, and other furniture of value.

If you own a Shock Vac, use it to help remove water that has a puddle in your home and help prevent further damage to your carpet or hardwood flooring. Open windows in your home, and turn on any ceiling fans. This will help start the drying process. If you do not own a Shock Vac, perhaps a neighbor can loan you one.

Take pictures of all the damaged areas. This includes walls, baseboards, carpets, hardwood flooring, and all valuables. This will be important to turn into your insurance company when you file your claim.

Remember SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino

Always remember that SERVPRO has a staff of qualified professionals to answer any and all of your questions. Not only will they help you with your water damage, but they are also qualified to help with mold prevention and remediation. Joe McCann has a plethora of water restoration knowledge!

Wind Storms in Southern California

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

Storms in Southern California

Sometimes a storm may take on other qualities other than one of rain or snowfall. In Southern California, there are frequent natural disasters that take the form of Fire and/or Wind.

SERVPRO of South Pasadena and San Marino help recovery efforts from Fire and Wind storms and the damage they cause homeowners and businesses every year. Both residential and commercial buildings are served by our SERVPRO team.

High Winds Cause Roof Damage

Recently, in Hacienda Heights California, there were unusually high winds that gusted locally to such high speeds that residential roofing materials were blown off homes causing the owners the expense of repairs along with the additional risk from exposure to water damage with possible seasonal rainstorms.

Wind Storms that occur in California generally are seen in the Summer and Fall months.

Famous Santa Ana Winds

The so-called Santa Ana winds are strong, extremely dry, down-slope winds that originate inland and affect coastal Southern California.  Santa Ana winds are known for the hot dry weather that they bring in the fall (often the hottest of the year), but they can arise at other times of the year as well. Although the Santa Ana winds can be enjoyable for some, they can be very destructive.

Seasonal Santa Ana Winds are a source of potential property damage to homes and businesses that SERVPRO of South Pasadena and San Marino can help customers recover from.

Storm Warning - Flooding

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

Overwhelmed? Let Us Help

Flooding in your home from stormwater can feel overwhelming and frustrating. Having a plan in place in case of flooding can help prepare you. And SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino is here to serve you!

FEMA Flood Map

To see how likely you are to suffer from a flood you can look up the FEMA Flood Map; it shows general flood risk by region. All you have to do is enter your address in the search bar on the website to see your area's flood zones.

Take note the next you have a rainstorm - does the water run towards or away from your home? Does it puddle around any doors? Any basement windows?

Floodproofing renovations are helpful if you plan on building a home in a heavily flooded area. Or if your existing home is in a heavily flooded area, but was not built with flooding in mind. Installing Foundation vents are a form of "wet flood-proofing," allowing water to flow through your home, as opposed to water being trapped around it. This both provides an outlet for flood water to escape your home. Having a Sump pump on hand with a battery backup is a great tool for removing water from basements.

Make sure all gutter runoffs are pointed away from your home.

Minimizing Flood Damage:

If flooding in your home has already started, or if a storm is on its way, use these tips to help minimize the damage:

  • If it's not raining, open windows to allow airflow through your home
    • Use a shop vacuum or sump pump to remove water quickly
    • Document flooding with pictures or videos to defend your insurance claim
    • Clear out gutters and drains so that water can flow freely
    • Use sandbags to block any gaps that will lead to flooding
    • Move rugs, furniture, electronics, and other valuables to prevent damage

Here For You No Matter The Weather

Additionally, always know that SERVPRO South Pasadena and San Marino are here for all of your water damage needs. The San Gabriel Valley Foothills are notorious for flooding. Wildfires in the surrounding mountains change the composition of the soil; leading to the more dramatic water runoff during the rainy season. SERVPRO South Pasadena and San Marino are able to provide you flood restoration services, sanitation contaminated water, drying services for both commercial and residential properties.

Southern California Living

Living in Southern California, residents are very aware of the impact the Santa Ana
winds can have during brush fire season. Increased wind speeds can dramatically
change the outcome of a fire.

SERVPRO Reminders

SERVPRO of South Pasadena and San Marino would like to remind residents of the San Gabriel
Valley and surrounding areas tips to keep your home safe during fire season.

  • Keep trees pruned. Wildfire can spread to treetops. Check with your local
fire department to determine the appropriate amount trees should be
    trimmed.
  • Always clear debris from around your home. Leaves and dead foliage should
always be removed from gutters, porches, decks, and other outside areas.
This also applies to dry, overgrown grass. These items make perfect fuel for
    a traveling fire.
  • Keep front, back, and side yard lawns properly hydrated.
  • Have an emergency plan set in place for your home. Important documents should be
readily available in case of evacuation.
  • If you are a pet owner, have emergency
supplies set and ready to go.
  • Any outdoor furniture or wooden gardening boxes
should be moved away from your home, as far as possible.
  • Close all doors and
windows to prevent embers from entering your home. Make sure garden hoses are all
connected to a water source – they can be useful to firefighters.
  • Fix or replace broken roof tiles and cover exterior attic vents. This helps
  • Prevent ember penetration.

Call Joe McCann

In the event that a wildfire does damage your home, please call SERVPRO South Pasadena and San Marino. Joe McCann and his team are able to handle any sized fire restoration

Water Damage In Your San Marino Home

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

A San Marino resident experienced water damage resulting in hazardous mold. The water damage affected the front living room, bathroom, and kitchen area. SERVPRO of South Pasadena was called to provide mold remediation and water damage services.

How We Handle Water and Mold Damage

The crew disposed of all the wet and mold invested materials, including drywall, flooring, and wood trim. The SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino crew set up containment of a barrier with airlock between the affected area of the San Marino home and the unaffected areas.

Our experienced technicians removed pieces like the toilet, sink, and medicine cabinets in order to reach the water-damaged area and ensure quick and effective drying. The mold-affected areas were carefully treated and sanitized while an air scrubber was set up. Hazardous mold-affected material was disposed of properly by the South Pasadena/San Marino crew. The home was restored from the water damage and extensive mold by the crew and the San Dimas resident's home was cleared after a mold clearance test by a third party.

No matter the size or severity of the damage,  Joe McCann and his crew are happy to take on any challenge. Mold remediation can be overwhelming for the resident, and that's why it's our motto to make it "Like it never even happened." Need a restoration company you can trust that abides by CDC guidelines? Call SERVPRO of South Pasadena/San Marino today!
